Formed in 2010 over a mutual love of David Byrne and Brian Eno’s classic album ‘My Life In The Bush of Ghosts’, Blood Sport is an arresting concoction of hypnotic Afro-beat and African guitar styles such as Soukous and Juju, locked grooves, the raw energy of post-punk fused with the minimalist tendencies of electronic music. The result is a noisy, rhythmic strain of experimental rock so unique that the band have come to dub it ‘aggro-beat’.

The underground success of EPs Journal No. 4 (TAAE017), ‘Fruits’ (released through Tye Die Tapes) and ‘Ø’ earned the band a broad fan base; while their legendary part-improvised and completely uninterrupted live sets have seen them earn their stripes as not only regulars at DIY warehouse nights throughout the UK, but also sharing stages with artists as diverse as Nisennenmondai, Pere Ubu, Mike Watt, Golden Teacher, Zs, Ghost Poet and Kanda Bongo Man.

AUD #17, ‘Journal No. 4′, was released on the 8th October 2011 on 100 limited cassettes and download. The cassettes have now sold out, but you can listen to and download the record below:

In September 2013 the band released their debut full-length, ‘Life in Units’ to critical acclaim, gaining unanimous praise for its beguiling unpredictability. Meticulous planners with an (often unexplained) reason behind literally everything they do, ‘Life In Units only builds upon the differentiated sounds of ‘Fruits’, and shows an increasing interest in minimal repetition, drawn out grooves, and a hypnotic complexity.

Having had a rework of album closer ‘Dry Water’ featured as the second track on Rocket Recordings’ heralded 15th anniversary compilation ‘Crystallized’, they have firmly set themselves apart from others on the UK underground music scene, forging a path that is truly their own.

2014 has seen Blood Sport experiment with performance techniques, including a location-inspired commission in the legendary practice space of Cabaret Voltaire: ‘Western Works’; and a dance set utilising an analog drum machine made for club consumption. A recently recorded EP is set to come out on a widely-celebrated UK experimental music label, details to be confirmed.

Press for ‘Life in Units’

“Nothing Blood Sport do is by chance, and with Life in Units they have constructed an experimental behemoth which bears new fruit on every listen.” – Now Then

“…each track in itself is an absorbing journey contributing towards the mind-bending whole. A must hear!” LP 8/10 – Exposed

“A glorious fusion of opposing forces… With Blood Sport, you never quite know if they’re here to start the party or to destroy it. Which, of course, is what makes them so fantastic.” LP 9/10 – Loud & Quiet

“Seriously, Alex Keegan, Nick Potter and Sam Parkin are geniuses – the idea of them sitting down and writing an album as ambitious and creative as this is inconceivable, and yet it happened. If there’s any justice in the world, in 20 years’ time there’ll be a Friday night dedicated to aggro-beat on BBC Four, or at least a late-night documentary on 6Music that explains how Blood Sport changed the face of music forever.” – Drowned in Sound

Blood Sport
Two years in gestation, Blood Sport’s latest LP Axe Laid to the Root was released on Blast First Petite (Factory Floor/Nisennenmondai/Mika Vainio) in February. This will be their official release party in Sheffield, channeled through the Hybrid Vigour night that hopes to be a construct embodying their occupation of both the live band and club night realm. As always, expect hi-nrg, relentless, polyrhythmic pulsations.

Nkisi
Melika Ngombe Kolongo aka Nkisi co-runs the label NON Records: a far-reaching label arm of the sovereign state of NON, a community of artists of Africa and of the African diaspora whose citizens reside in villages, towns, and cities across the globe. NON cuts across genre and geography to unite politically and sonically forward-thinking musicians in an ongoing exploration of Pan-African identity in the twenty-first century.
Based in London, Nkisi’s sets explore a contemporary synthesis of hardcore sounds associated with Hamburg’s Doomcore label, embodying the spirit of Belgian New Beat, whilst mutating these sounds through Congolese rhythms. She has recently launched her explorations on a NTS radio show of her own.

Nomadic Female DJ Troupe
The Nomadic Female DJ Troupe are Francine Perry, Lisa Busby and Ruthie Woodward who converge as a roaming collective through the shared use of found, sonic materials within their work. As a group they work site specifically and in an improvised way – ‘popping up’ and undertaking live performances, workshops, and other interventionist actions. In the spirit of inspiring feminist traditions of the second and third wave, their interventions are fluid and pluri-vocal allowing room for anyone to join them at any time.

Broken FM
This will be the debut live performance of the latest incarnation of a collaboration between three individuals integral to Sheffield’s underground music scene. Utilising a myriad collection of hardware, Broken FM create a techno assemblage pounding and intricate in equal measure. Hopefully the first of many an outing by this trio whose collective musical credentials promise that this will be a truly thrilling sonic adventure.

Sensoria are teaming up with our previous hosting partners from 2015’s festival, Picture House Social. With them we’ll be bring over the In the Red-signed U.S band Meatbodies with support from one of Sheffield’s finest band’s, Seize the Chair.

Meatbodies

Loud, fast, wild — you’ve heard this all before but you haven’t because the Meatbodies are brand new and they’re going to dominate your eyes and ears and give you a bang over like you’ve never had before.

“Every person involved in this deserves to be high-fived until their hands chafe and bleed.” –NOISEY

“Any band can churn out an exciting two-minute garage punk song and then repeat the formula a few times. Very few artists of this ilk exhibit this much patience, which makes for a continually rewarding listen.” – PITCHFORK

The group’s self-titled In The Red debut LP is an absolute rager, a simple, assured compendium of humongous hook-laden rock tunes – STEREOGUM

The album’s finest punk stomps, such as the justifiably-titled ‘Gold’, are impressive enough to recall a legend of this genre, the dear departed Jay Reatard. – NME

Whitley Bay Film Festival present

20th Anniversary Event OUR FRIENDS IN THE NORTH with special guest, writer Peter Flannery.

Our Friends in the North is the classic saga of of the political and personal fortunes of four North East friends over  three decades of regional and national turbulence and social change. Peter Flannery, whose  grandfather was a Jarrow Marcher, wrote it originally for the stage, having been told by T Dan Smith – “Mr Newcastle” – that it would be “an epic of Shakespearean proportions!” T Dan Smith  would inspire the character Austin Donohue,  portrayed by master character actor Alun Armstrong. The  actors who portrayed Mary ,”Tosker” ,”Geordie” and Nicky faced on-screen roles that aged physically ,emotionally and politically from 1964 to1995. The series was a landmark in their subsequent careers.

Peter Flannery will talk exclusively about the extraordinary saga of how “Our Friends” was brought to the screen 20 years ago – an  unforgettable television drama he himself modestly called “a posh soap opera”! And how did Oasis get the best marketing campaign ever?
Host: Chris Phipps.
