South Bronx graffiti artist Shy Zoro is commissioned to paint a backdrop for a rap/break-dance concert. The film features seminal figures within the given period, such as Fab Five Freddy, Lee Quiñones, Lady Pink, The Rock Steady Crew, The Cold Crush Brothers, Queen Lisa Lee of Zulu Nation, Grandmaster Flash and Zephyr.
The film has received a large cult following over the years after its initial release. Highly regarded hip hop albums such as Illmatic by Nas, Midnight Marauders by A Tribe Called Quest, Black Sunday by Cypress Hill, Resurrection by Common, Big Shots by Charizma, Operation: Doomsday by MF Doom, Check Your Head by Beastie Boys, Beat Konducta by Madlib, Jay Stay Paid by J Dilla and Quality Control by Jurassic 5 have featured samples from the film.

For over 30 years, Martin Bisi has been recording music from his studio in Gowanus, Brooklyn. After a chance New York encounter, the studio was founded with money from Brian Eno, who subsequently worked on the album ON LAND there. Bisi has worked with many influential musicians, including Sonic Youth, Swans, Herbie Hancock, John Zorn and the Dresden Dolls. Now though, he finds himself squeezed in by the approaching gentrification of his neighborhood. The documentary includes interviews with musicians such as Lee Ranaldo, Michael Gira, Brian Viglione of the Dresden Dolls, Bob Bert, Bill Laswell and Michael Holman.

BC Studio in Brooklyn’s Gowanus neighborhood has a rich history, starting with it’s founding in the early ‘80s with Bill Laswell, and with money fromBrian Eno who worked on the album On Land there. Working with Bill Laswell and the band Material, Bisi recorded Herbie Hancock’s hit “Rockit” in this underground space. This was the first mainstream song to feature a DJ ‘scratching’ with a turntable. Following that success, Bisi worked with many other influential musicians there, including Sonic Youth, Swans, John Zorn, Africa Bambaataa, Material/Bill Laswell, Boredoms, Dresden Dolls, Cop Shoot Cop, White Zombie, Foetus, Unsane, Serena Maneesh, US Maple, Jon Spencer’s Boss Hog, among others.. He has recorded across many genres, from experimental music, to hip hop and indie rock in the old factory building by the contaminated Gowanus Canal.
On a serious note, the documentary also contemplates the future of the recording studio as it is squeezed in by the encroaching gentrification of the neighborhood and Bisi’s fears that increasing property values will push out long-time renters and artists like himself.
The documentary includes interviews with musicians such as Michael Gira of Swans, Brian Viglione of the Dresden Dolls, Bob Bert, who played on Sonic Youth’s Bad Moon Rising, Bill Laswell of Material, JG Thirlwell aka Foetus, DXT who did the turntablism on “Rockit”, Michael Holman of Gray (with Jean-Michel Basquiat) and creator of famed 1984 hip-hop TV pilot ‘Graffiti Rock.

Sensoria Festival are proud to present a marathon screening to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the critically acclaimed BBC television series, Our Friends in the North.
This seminal TV serial charted the course of the lives of four friends from Newcastle from 1964 to 1995. Some of the themes explored in the serial have a very strong contemporary relevance. The Guardian rated it the third greatest television drama of all time and it also helped launch the acting careers of now-major figures in the industry including Daniel Craig, Gina McKee, Mark Strong and Christopher Eccleston.

Grab one of the Picture House Social’s great pizzas and settle in for the complete nine-episode BAFTA winning serial depicting the 1960s through to the 1990s.
Throughout the 9 episodes, drama takes place during different pivotal years starting in 1964, spanning to 1995. Through the time span, the personal lives of the characters become intertwined with the political struggles of their home town of Newcastle, and the capital, London. We also see the machinations behind the scenes that affect their lives, often for the worse, such as: slum housing projects, police corruption, the rise of Thatcherism, political sleaze, and specific events like the 1984 Miners’ Strike.

Richard Hawley, John Grant, and Bill Ryder-Jones come together to perform an unmissable event at Sensoria; The 3 Ring Circus.
This special occasion event showcases three amazing artists playing three shows, all on the same night.
How does it work?
Three artists come together in three small venues each with a very different atmosphere.
Each artist acts as the opening act in a venue, plays 40 minutes stripped down/acoustic set then jumps into a waiting car outside which will speed them to the next venue; Until all the artists have played an opener, middle and headlining set at each of the venues!
The audience takes the role of sitting in either of their chosen venues, whilst the artists break all speed restrictions in order to get to the next show.
The only catch is no one knows what order the artists will appear at which venue. So it’s pot luck. But the important thing is you get to see:
Richard Hawley, John Grant and Bill Ryder-Jones all on the same bill in the most intimate surroundings.
Each of the inner city venues grant a slightly varying experience; allowing the audience to decide for themselves which setting they would like to see the artists in.

Shamberg worked on a raft of well known music videos including Talking Heads, The B-52’s, R.E.M., Patti Smith and Grace Jones but he was perhaps most closely associated with Factory Records and New Order throughout his career. He was responsible for producing some of the band’s best known music videos, including True Faith which was nominated for “Best Music Video” at the 1988 Brit Awards.
Sadly, a few years ago, Michael died from a progressive neurological disease. This celebration of just some of his very memorable work is free, but there will be an optional opportunity for a charitable donation.

We are delighted to welcome back Wrangler to Sensoria.
Wrangler are Stephen Mallinder (Cabaret Voltaire), Phil Winter (Tunng) and Benge (John Foxx & The Maths). Their debut album, LA Spark (released in 2014) was described by Q Magazine as ‘creepy and brilliant, music you can dance to while looking over your shoulder. The best kind of music.’
The new album White Glue (recorded at Benge’s MemeTune Studios) features 9 new tracks that also have the 3-D depth of analogue, but there’s less geek and more funk; more Mod than Modular in its tailored, minimalist design. Mallinder’s vocals are a surreal joy, smeared with effects and electronics as they change, chant and shift around the jump-cut lyrics.
The new single ‘Stupid’ is out now.

Cleopatra Jones is the US federal agent played by fashion illustrator, ex-model and martial arts expert Tamara Dobson. Our kick-ass 6′ 2″ heroine is assigned to crack down on drug trafficking in the US and abroad. After she burns down a Turkish poppy field, the notorious drug-lord ‘Mommy’ is furious at the loss of her supply and vows to destroy Cleopatra.
Film screening time is 7pm, workshops/other activities take place from 5.30pm – 10pm.
